Auction result well in line with expectations
The work A gentleman, in a maroon coat with embroidered border, his powdered hair en queue by Samuel Shelley was auctioned at Christies in London in May 2004. The price achieved of GBP 537.75 (€ 806.82) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 400.00 – 600.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Samuel Shelley achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work The Aston sisters: Lady Legard and Mrs Hedges as Flora and Ceres, their arms around one another, in white dresses and pink and green stoles, ears of wheat and flowers in their upswept powdered hair, one sister holding a basket of fruit and the other in April 2002 with an auction result of GBP 16,450.00 (€ 26,615.67
