This price was achieved in the auction Old Master Pictures at Christies in London and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of GBP 20,000.00 many times over. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Pierre-Jacques Volaire; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Vesuvius erupting at night seen from the foothills, with elegant onlookers, a view of the Bay of Naples beyond sold at auction in July 2005 with the realized price of GBP 142,400.00 (€ 206,549.86).
