Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Vesuvius Erupting At Night With Spectators In The Foreground by Pierre-Jacques Volaire was sold in the Old Master & British Paintings Day Sale auction at Sothebys in London in July 2013. The price achieved of GBP 68,500.00 (€ 78,273.19) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 60,000.00 – 80,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Pierre-Jacques Volaire - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Vesuvius erupting at night seen from the foothills, with elegant onlookers, a view of the Bay of Naples beyond, which sold at auction in July 2005 for GBP 142,400.00 (€ 206,549.86).
