A top price for Pierre-Jacques Volaire - as previously expected
The work Vesuvius erupting at night seen from the foothills, with elegant onlookers, a view of the Bay of Naples beyond by Pierre-Jacques Volaire was sold in the Important Old Master Pictures auction at Christies in London in July 2005. The price achieved of GBP 142,400.00 (€ 206,549.86) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 120,000.00 – 180,000.00. Even if this result could not surprise positively, Vesuvius erupting at night seen from the foothills, with elegant onlookers, a view of the Bay of Naples beyond is the most expensive artwork by Pierre-Jacques Volaire that we have observed at auctions so far.
