Auction result well in line with expectations
The work A mediterranean bay with figures unloading a man-o'-war, figures playing cards in the foreground, other vessels beyond by Pierre-Jacques Volaire was auctioned at Christies in London in July 2012. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 30,000.00 – 50,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 32,450.00 (€ 41,332.58) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Admittedly, works by Pierre-Jacques Volaire have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Vesuvius erupting at night seen from the foothills, with elegant onlookers, a view of the Bay of Naples beyond in July 2005 with an auction result of GBP 142,400.00 (€ 206,549.86).
