Upper estimate price exceeded by 38 %.
In November 2007 Christies in London held the auction The Gordon Collection of Portrait Miniatures, which included the work Newman Knowlys (1758-1836), Recorder of London, in blue coat with gold buttons, white shirt and cravat, powdered hair; sky background by Philip Jean. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 2,750.00 (€ 3,850.71), 38% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Philip Jean achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Paul Sandby (1731-1809), In Blue Coat, White Waistcoat And Cravat, Powdered Hair En Queue, Holding A Pen And Open Book; Landscape Background With Windsor Castle In The Distance in November 2013 with an auction result of GBP 35,000.00 (€ 42,117.82).
