Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Boethius And Philosophy by Mattia Preti was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in January 2020, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 1,500,000.00 – 2,000,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 1,460,000.00 (€ 1,316,145.32). Other works by Mattia Preti have also sold for higher prices; the highest price we have seen at auction so far was achieved in January 2008 by the work David Playing The Harp Before Saul at USD 2,169,000.00 (€ 1,461,491.81).
