Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Lucas Cranach II achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in January 2012. In the Important Old Master Paintings and Sculpture auction, the work Portrait Of A Man In A Hat sold for USD 158,500.00 (€ 121,428.02) - well above the upper estimate of USD 70,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Lucas Cranach II achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of a lady, three-quarter-length, in a green velvet and orange dress and a pearl-embroidered black hat in July 2007 with an auction result of GBP 1,812,000.00 (€ 2,691,238.28).
