engraving, 1509, on laid paper, watermark Arms of Saxony (similar to Briquet 1203) a good but slightly later impression of this important print, with small margins, very skilfully retouched in grey wash in the more densely hatched areas, two parallel printer's creases at lower left, otherwise in good condition

The result of GBP 3,000.00 (€ 3,545.65) was exactly at the lower end of the estimate range of GBP 3,000.00 – 5,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Lucas Cranach I achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work The Bocca Della Verità (The Mouth Of Truth) in July 2015 with an auction result of GBP 9,333,000.00 (€ 13,231,059.30).

Die Arbeit The Penance of Saint John Chrysostom von Lucas Cranach I wurde im Dezember 2019 in der Auktion Old Master Prints bei Christies in London versteigert. Das dabei erzielte Ergebnis von GBP 3.000,00 (€ 3.545,65) entsprach exakt dem unteren Ende der Schätzpreisspanne von GBP 3.000,00 – 5.000,00. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Lucas Cranach I erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit The Bocca Della Verità (The Mouth Of Truth) im Juli 2015 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 9.333.000,00 (€ 13.231.059,30).
