Edo period (1615-1868), early/mid-19th century
Two oban tate-e bijinga prints: the first depicting the courtesan Segawa of the Matsubaya drinking ayamezake (sake soaked with iris root) from the series Seiro Gosekku, (Beauties of the Yoshiwara Compared to the Five Festivals), published by Iseya Soemon, censor's seal kiwame, 32cm x 23cm (12 5/8in x 9 1/16in); the second from the series Tosei bijin zoroi (Collection of Contemporary Beauties), depicting a mother standing and holding an infant who looks down at his face reflected in the water of the kingyobachi (goldfish bowl), published by Kawaguchiya Uhei, with gyoji censor's seal Nishimiya, 35.5cm x 25.7cm (13 15/16in x 10 1/8in); both signed Kikukawa Eizan hitsu; both in card mount. Upper estimated price slightly exceeded
The work Unknown by Kikukawa Eizan was sold in the Japan-Mania (Online-only) auction at Bonhams in November this year. It achieved a price of GBP 960.00 (€ 1,112.43), exceeding the upper end of the estimate range by 20%. Admittedly, works by Kikukawa Eizan have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Haru no raku (Spring pleasures) in March 2007 with an auction result of USD 13,200.00 (€ 9,869.90).
Oberer Schätzpreis leicht übertroffen
Die Arbeit Unknown von Kikukawa Eizan wurde im November diesen Jahres in der Auktion Japan-Mania (Online-only) bei Bonhams versteigert. Sie erzielte dabei einen Preis von GBP 960,00 (€ 1.112,43) und übertraf damit das obere Ende der Schätzpreisspanne um 20%. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Kikukawa Eizan auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Haru no raku (Spring pleasures) im März 2007 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 13.200,00 (€ 9.869,90).
