KEISAI EISEN (1790–1848)
Edo period (1615-1868), early to mid-19th century
Two shikishiban and one chuban surimono print; the first a shikishiban depicting an equipage for horseback archery, from the series Sanko (Three Celestial Lights), with four poems, signed Keisai, 20.4cm x 18.5cm (8in x 7¼in); the second a shikishiban, depicting a geisha in a hanami (cherry-blossom-viewing) party, requesting another cup of sake with one poem, signed Keisai Eisen ga; the last a chuban yoko-e, depicting a middle-class lady applying makeup in front of a mirror stand, with the assistance of a female servant, signed Keisai Esien ga with a seal, 19cm x 23cm (7½in x 9 1/16in); all mounted on card. Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Unknown by Keisai Eisen was sold in the From Harunobu to Hasui | Japanese Prints across the centuries auction at Bonhams in London in May this year. It changed hands for a price of GBP 1,920.00 (€ 2,233.93) achieving a result in the upper range of the estimate price range of GBP 1,500.00 – 2,000.00. Admittedly, works by Keisai Eisen have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Courtesan in September 2004 with an auction result of USD 23,900.00 (€ 19,247.81).
Auktionsergebnis im Rahmen der Erwartungen
Die Arbeit Unknown von Keisai Eisen wurde im Mai diesen Jahres in der Auktion From Harunobu to Hasui | Japanese Prints across the centuries bei Bonhams in London versteigert. Dabei wechselte sie für einen Preis von GBP 1.920,00 (€ 2.233,93) den Besitzer und erzielte damit ein Ergebnis im oberen Bereich der Schätzpreisspanne von GBP 1.500,00 – 2.000,00. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Keisai Eisen auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Courtesan im September 2004 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 23.900,00 (€ 19.247,81).
