Edo period (1615-1868), first half of the 19th century
All ōban tate-e prints, the first, entitled Hakone shuku (Hakone Station), number 11 from an untitled series of the 53 Stations of the Tokaido, signed Keisai Eisen ga, published by Tsutaya Kichizō (Kōeidō); the second, from the series Tosei kōbutsu hakkei (Eight Favorite Things in the Modern World), depicting a beauty reading, signed Keisai Eisen ga, sealed Sen, published by Izumiya Ichibei Kansendō; the third, entitled Komachi Shōshō michiyuki: Gyokuya nai Usugumo (The Journey of Komachi and Shōshō: Usugumo of the Gyokuya), from the series Hyōshi ōgi (Romantic Musical Fans), signed Keisai Eisen ga; the fourth depicting a courtesan, perhaps named Niodori, of an unidentified teahouse, from the series Keisei Gokenjin (Courtesans of Five Houses), an inset image of a Chinese sage in the upper left coming from the pun contained in the series titles, signed Keisai Eisen ga; the fifth, entitled Nihonbashi Nishikawa kishi Jizōson (The Festival Day of Jizōson, bank of Nishikawa, Nihonbashi), from the series Gorishō musubu no ennichi (Auspicious Festival Days for Good Fortune), signed Keisai Eisen ga; the sixth, depicting a beauty standing next to a lit candle, the inset image showing a man holding an infant and a beauty, signed Keisai Eisen ga, published by Matsumura Tatsuemon (6)

The work A Group Of Six Prints by Keisai Eisen was sold in the Fine Japanese and Korean Works of Art auction at Bonhams in March this year. The »bidding war« ended at USD 3,187.50 (€ 2,931.84), 59% above the upper estimate. Admittedly, works by Keisai Eisen have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Courtesan in September 2004 with an auction result of USD 23,900.00 (€ 19,247.81).
Oberer Schätzpreis um 59 % übertroffen
Die Arbeit A Group Of Six Prints von Keisai Eisen wurde im März diesen Jahres in der Auktion Fine Japanese and Korean Works of Art bei Bonhams versteigert. Das »Bietergefecht« endete beim Preis von USD 3.187,50 (€ 2.931,84) und damit 59% über dem oberen Schätzpreis. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Keisai Eisen auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Courtesan im September 2004 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 23.900,00 (€ 19.247,81).
