Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
When the work An inhabited ruin near a river by Jan van de Velde II was auctioned at Christies in London in July 2014, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 60,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at GBP 230,500.00 (€ 290,732.97). Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Jan van de Velde II; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot A Village On A Broad River With Two Horseman At A Gateway To The Left; And An Abbey By A River With A Group of Monks On A Track sold at auction in July 2005 with the realized price of GBP 355,200.00 (€ 515,214.25).

Der obere Schätzpreis war mit – rückwirkend betrachtet recht bescheidenen – GBP 60.000,00 angesetzt, der tatsächlich erzielte Preis hingegen war mit GBP 230.500,00 (€ 290.732,97) mehr als dreimal so hoch.
