Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
The work A brown thoroughbred, traditionally identified as 'Spanking Roger', held by a groom before an extensive landscape by James Seymour was worth GBP 157,800.00 (€ 188,441.23) to a buyer in July last year. This price was achieved in the auction Old Master Paintings at Bonhams in London and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of GBP 50,000.00 many times over. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by James Seymour; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Lord Portmore's 'Snap', a saddled chestnut hunter held by a groom, with a setter in a landscape sold at auction in July 2021 with the realized price of GBP 275,000.00 (€ 322,494.52).
