ovals, 1 1/16 in. (28 mm.) high, silver-gilt bracelet clasp frames with outer seed pearl borders, blue and white enamel and seed pearl ribbon and bow cresting centered by a ruby with ruby suspended on a pendant (2)

In May 2004 Christies in London held the auction IMPORTANT GOLD BOXES,OBJECTS OF VERTU & PORTRAIT MINIATURES, which included the work A young gentleman and lady; he, in red coat, embroidered white waistcoat and lace cravat, powdered hair en queue; and she, in bright-blue dress with lace underdress, gold striped scarf falling from her upswept brown hair and knotted at corsage by James Scouler. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 3,824.00 (€ 5,737.41), 53% above the upper estimate. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by James Scouler; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot William Powell (1735/1736-1769), In Fur-Lined Blue Gown, White Shirt With Lace Collar And Cuffs, Seated On A Chair With His Left Arm Resting On The Chair Back, Holding In His Right Hand A Playbill For A Double Bill Of Cymbeline And George Colman The Elder sold at auction in November 2013 with the realized price of GBP 8,750.00 (€ 10,529.
