Acquired in India circa 1960s by Prof. Derek Davenport | Purchased from the estate of the above in July 2017 | Derek A. Davenport was Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Purdue University, West Lafayette in Indiana. A stalwart in the field of education, he traveled extensively throughout the world, including India where he spent two sabbaticals overseas helping to establish the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur.

Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
The work Untitled (Malyagiri) by J. Sultan Ali was worth USD 15,000.00 (€ 12,175.32) to a buyer in March 2018. This price was achieved in the auction Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art at Sothebys in New York and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of USD 5,000.00 many times over. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by J. Sultan Ali - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Vanraj-Nandi, which sold at auction in March 2021 for USD 47,880.00 (€ 40,773.23).

Die Arbeit Untitled (Malyagiri) von J. Sultan Ali war einem Käufer im März 2018 USD 15.000,00 (€ 12.175,32) wert. Dieser Preise wurde in der Auktion Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art bei Sothebys in New York erzielt und übertraf den zuvor angesetzten oberen Schätzpreis von USD 5.000,00 um ein Vielfaches. Für andere Arbeiten von J. Sultan Ali mussten die Käufer allerdings auch schon deutlich tiefer in die Tasche greifen – das bisher höchste Auktionsergebnis haben wir für die Arbeit Vanraj-Nandi beobachtet, die im März 2021 für USD 47.880,00 (€ 40.773,23) versteigert wurde.
