HOWARD COOK (1901-1980) The New Yorker woodcut, on wove paper, 1930, signed, dated and inscribed 'imp.' in pencil, numbered 8/50 (Duffy notes that 35 were printed from the intended edition of 50), with wide margins, in generally good condition, framed Image: 17 1 ⁄ 2 x 8 5 ⁄ 8 in. (445 x 217 mm.) Sheet: 20 3 ⁄ 4 x 11 5 ⁄ 8 in. (527 x 296 mm.)

This artwork by Howard Cook achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in Sydney in August this year. In the Tales of the City: New York Prints and Photographs of the Early 20th Century auction, the work The New Yorker sold for USD 9,450.00 (€ 8,718.52) - well above the upper estimate of USD 5,000.00. Admittedly, works by Howard Cook have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Fog Patterns #2 in March 2019 with an auction result of USD 47,500.00 (€ 42,304.95).

Dieses Kunstwerk von Howard Cook erzielte im August diesen Jahres bei Christies in Sydney einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion Tales of the City: New York Prints and Photographs of the Early 20th Century wurde die Arbeit The New Yorker für USD 9.450,00 (€ 8.718,52) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von USD 5.000,00. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Howard Cook auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Fog Patterns #2 im März 2019 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 47.500,00 (€ 42.304,95).
