Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work An Italianate Landscape with Maneus Curius Dentatus with acolytes rejecting the gifts of the Samnites and preferring Turnips by George Lambert was auctioned at Christies in London in July last year, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 7,000.00 – 10,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 5,292.00 (€ 6,319.59). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by George Lambert achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work A View Of Fonthill, Wiltshire, With Haymakers In The Foreground in June 2001 with an auction result of GBP 71,950.00 (€ 119,523.27).
