Lithographic portrait frontispiece of the author on india paper mounted, 35 hand-coloured tinted lithographic plates on 30 sheets after Angas, drawn on stone by Angas, J. Needham, A. Laby, B.W. Hawkins or W. Wing, printed by Charles Lovell, M. & N. Hanhart, Hullmandel & Walton, wood-engraved vignette illustrations. (Margins of portrait lightly evenly browned, list of illustrations leaf lightly creased, some even light browning to text leaves, occasional light scattered spotting, mostly marginal, short marginal tear to text-leaf for plate XX without loss.) Modern half red crushed morocco, top edge gilt (two tiny spots to upper cover).
FIRST EDITION of this important work, including outstanding portraits, particularly of the Zulus. The plates also include views of Cape Town, Hottentot Holland, Somerset West and Durban. 'The three large works by George French Angas, the "Kaffirs", New Zealanders and South Australia are amongst the most important of the illustrated travel books of their period ... Of the three works, the "Kaffirs" is the most uncommon' (Tooley). Abbey Travel 339; Colas 134; Mendelssohn I, pp.45-6; Tooley 60.

Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Unknown by George French Angas was auctioned at Christies in London in October 2012. The price achieved of GBP 7,500.00 (€ 9,324.93) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 6,000.00 – 9,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by George French Angas achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Eaglehawk Gully, Bendigo, 1852 in November 2020 with an auction result of AUD 418,200.00 (€ 350,016.74).
