Artwork auctioned at eight times the upper estimate price
When the work Mother And Child by But Mochtar was auctioned at Sothebys in Hong Kong in April 2012, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - HKD 300,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than eight times as high at HKD 2,540,000.00 (€ 247,491.12). Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by But Mochtar; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Patung Elemen Estetik (Study Of Esthetic Principles) sold at auction in April 2014 with the realized price of HKD 3,640,000.00 (€ 338,543.62).
