Description
signed and dated 'Conner 1956' (lower right); signed again, inscribed, titled and dated again 'Canto 16 The Inferno Conner Sept. 29, 1955 "Geryon"' (lower right of the margin)
ink, tempera and paper collage on paper
8 ¾ x 11 ¾ in. (22.2 x 29.8 cm.)
Executed in 1956.
The present Geryon, from 1956, stands as an intricately-articulated work on paper from a pivotal period in Bruce Conner’s career. Christian mysticism, the influence of William Blake and Dante’s Inferno, in particular, acted as key influences on Conner’s oeuvre at this time. Conner created this early rendition of the Geryon subject (which he would continue to explore, in later lithographs as well), at the young age off 22. 1956 involved an array of change for Conner, with moves from Wichita
The subject creature in this masterful Geryon is the son of Chrysaor and Callirrhoe, and the grandson of Medusa, in Greek mythology. Geryon is often referred to as a giant with human faces, sometimes depicted with three-faces or three-heads.
Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner, circa 1966

Auction result well in line with expectations
The work GERYON by Bruce Conner was sold in the First Open | Post-War & Contemporary Art auction at Christies in New York in July 2017. The price achieved of USD 22,500.00 (€ 19,025.88) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as USD 18,000.00 – 25,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Bruce Conner achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Cannabis Collage in November 2016 with an auction result of USD 631,500.00 (€ 596,993.76).
