The exhibition Annibale Carracci: The Frescoes in the Herrera Chapel is dedicated to rather unknown wall paintings by the Italian Baroque painter Carracci (circa 1560-1609). After opening at the Museo del Prado in Madrid in March 2022, the show now moves to Barcelona, to the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. There, the works, including drawings, made by Carracci and his workshop, will be on view from July 8 to October 9. From November, the Palazzo Barberini in Rome will exhibit the works.
Carracci's restored frescoes come from the chapel of the Juan Enriquez de Herrera family, located in the church of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli in Rome. Carracci dedicated the designs for his murals to the Franciscan saint Didacus of Alcalà. In 1605, due to illness, he entrusted completion to Francesco Albani, a master student from Carracci's Bolognese workshop. In the 1830s, the frescoes were transferred to canvas and transferred to Spain. Three of the 19 works are lost today.
