“The old concept of ink painting is to create from rice paper but it is quite difficulty to identify if it is ink paining from my work. This is my stance for the thinking of contemporary art. What I want to do is an “unprecedented in the history of Chinese art” and I intend to build a new personal system, a simple language that completely belongs to me.
Zhang Yu is not only a Chinese contemporary artist but also the founder and advocator of theory. His creations and discourses are closely related to the entire exploration process of Chinese contemporary art and Chinese paintings but it can also be said that his personal creation course reflects the post Chinese contemporary art of the “85 new trend.” After the 1980s, China also faces with a brand-new atmosphere due to the open art of politic

Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Fingerprints 2008.11-2 by Zhang Yu was sold in the 20 Century and Contemporary Chinese Art auction at China Guardian in Hong Kong in April 2015. The price achieved of HKD 149,500.00 (€ 17,277.82) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as HKD 120,000.00 – 180,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Zhang Yu achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Letter To Boqing in October 2017 with an auction result of HKD 26,500,000.00 (€ 2,916,638.05).
