It is our honor to present two of Zhang Yu’s works from different series in this auction, including the early “Divine Light” series and the classic “Fingerprint” series, which lasts towards today. Zhang replaced brush with fingers in his fingerprint works, using red color, light ink or just water to replace the traditional black ink. The finger is pressed onto the paper repeatedly to detach the aesthetics of traditional paintings, which fundamentally changes the limitation of materials and the media for ink painting, establishing a personal style and artistic language. He has developed an expression form with idealism and oriental Zen.

Auction result well in line with expectations
In October 2015 China Guardian in Hong Kong held the auction 20th Century and Contemporary Chinese Art, which included the work Divine Light No. 45 by Zhang Yu. The price achieved of HKD 448,400.00 (€ 52,385.08) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as HKD 380,000.00 – 480,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Zhang Yu achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Letter To Boqing in October 2017 with an auction result of HKD 26,500,000.00 (€ 2,916,638.05).
