Despite his accidental start in painting at the age of 56, Yu Chengyao had a superb sense of structural design and was a highly acclaimed painter. Born in 1898, he was brought up by his grandmother after the tragic death of his parents. Yu was also a poet, calligrapher and researcher of Nan Kuan music.
Inspired by the landscapes of his native Fukien province, his work personified the Chinese obsession with rocks and mountains. However, due to his unfamiliarity and indifference towards paintings of the past, he strayed from the ts’un strokes of traditional painters, subconsciously innovating a new style of painting by looking at nature entirely from his own point of view. Upper estimate price exceeded by 89 %.
This artwork by Yu Chengyao achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in Hong Kong in August 2021. In the Inkspiration: Chinese Paintings Online auction, the work Landscape in ink sold for HKD 37,800.00 (€ 4,116.36) - well above the upper estimate of HKD 20,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Yu Chengyao achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Magnificent Landscape in November 2008 with an auction result of HKD 5,780,000.00 (€ 587,379.86).
Oberer Schätzpreis um 89 % übertroffen
Dieses Kunstwerk von Yu Chengyao erzielte im August 2021 bei Sothebys in Hong Kong einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion Inkspiration: Chinese Paintings Online wurde die Arbeit Landscape in ink für HKD 37.800,00 (€ 4.116,36) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von HKD 20.000,00. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Yu Chengyao erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Magnificent Landscape im November 2008 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von HKD 5.780.000,00 (€ 587.379,86).
