Auction result well in line with expectations
The work H.M.S. Victory saluting a Royal Navy brig being towed past the old flagship's permanent mooring into Portsmouth harbour by William Edward Atkins was sold in the MARITIME PICTURES auction at Christies in London in May 2005. The price achieved of GBP 360.00 (€ 531.47) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 300.00 – 500.00. Admittedly, works by William Edward Atkins have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work The Battle of Trafalgar, 21st October 1805: The destruction of the French 74-gun Achille in November 2000 with an auction result of GBP 1,410.00 (€ 2,304.59).
