This artwork by William Edward Atkins achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in October 2000. In the British and Continental Watercolours and Drawings auction, the work Fishing boats leaving Portsmouth; and Portsmouth, moonlight sold for GBP 940.00 (€ 1,606.73) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 500.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by William Edward Atkins; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot The Battle of Trafalgar, 21st October 1805: The destruction of the French 74-gun Achille sold at auction in November 2000 with the realized price of GBP 1,410.00 (€ 2,304.59).
