Auction result well in line with expectations
In March 2003 Christies in New York held the auction AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF JAPANESE PRINTS, which included the work Oyama yau, Tomomae Fudo chojo no zu (Night rain, Oyama, view of Tomomae Fudo Peak), from the series Meisho hakkei (Eight views of famous places) by Utagawa Toyokuni II. The price achieved of USD 8,365.00 (€ 7,674.31) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as USD 7,000.00 – 9,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Utagawa Toyokuni II - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Ichikawa Danjuro in a pleasure quarter scene, which sold at auction in December 2021 for GBP 21,420.00 (€ 25,549.57).
