When the work Ichikawa Danjuro in a pleasure quarter scene by Utagawa Toyokuni II was auctioned at Sothebys in London in December 2021, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 5,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than four times as high at GBP 21,420.00 (€ 25,549.57). This high result makes Ichikawa Danjuro in a pleasure quarter scene the most expensive artwork by Utagawa Toyokuni II that we have observed at auctions so far.
