This artwork by Thomas Roberts achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in May 2008. In the Sporting Art auction, the work Mares and a foal in a wooded landscape sold for GBP 144,500.00 (€ 183,810.31) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 50,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Thomas Roberts - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work The Sheet of Water at Carton Park, Co. Kildare, with the Duke and Duchess of Leinster out walking, and gardeners rolling a serpentine path in the foreground, which sold at auction in May 2000 for GBP 454,750.00 (€ 729,706.05).
