Auction result misses estimated price range
In May 2000 a collector was able to acquire the work Mrs Captain Thomas, facing left in lace-bordered maroon velvet dress with white underslip, gold and gem studded brooch at corsage, her brown hair dressed in ringlets by William John Newton for GBP 587.50 (€ 942.72). This price was achieved in the auction Miniatures at Christies in London and was even below the estimate range of GBP 600.00 – 800.00 set by the auction house. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by William John Newton achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Captain Thomas Boteler In Gold-Bordered Naval Uniform With White Facings And Gold Epaulettes in November 2006 with an auction result of GBP 7,800.00 (€ 11,583.24).
