The work Preliminary Design For A Ceiling by James Thornhill was auctioned at Christies in London in June 2001. It achieved a price of GBP 2,115.00 (€ 3,513.44), exceeding the upper end of the estimate range by 41%. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by James Thornhill achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Proposed Design For The Saloon Ceiling At Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire: The Apotheosis of Hercules in June 2005 with an auction result of GBP 45,600.00 (€ 67,582.08).
