This artwork by Henry Raeburn achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in March 2017. In the Two Great Scottish Collections: Property from the Forbeses of Pitsligo and the Marquesses of Lothian auction, the work Portrait Of Sir William Forbes, 6Th Bt. Of Pitsligo (1739-1806), Half-Length, Wearing Black And The Order Of Nova Scotia sold for GBP 23,750.00 (€ 27,832.66) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 12,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Henry Raeburn achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Sir Evan Murray-MacGregor of MacGregor, 2nd Bt., K.C.B., K.C.H., 19th Chief of Clan Gregor, as a boy (1785-1841), full-length, in tartan, in a landscape in July 2014 with an auction result of GBP 458,500.00 (€ 578,312.66).
