Upper estimated price slightly exceeded
In May 2002 Christies in London held the auction IMPORTANT PORTRAIT MINIATURES, GOLD BOXES & OBJECTS OF VERTU, which included the work A young gentleman, facing right in blue coat with large gold buttons, white waistcoat and frilled cravat, powdered hair en queue by Philip Jean. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 1,792.50 (€ 2,807.08), 20% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Philip Jean achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Paul Sandby (1731-1809), In Blue Coat, White Waistcoat And Cravat, Powdered Hair En Queue, Holding A Pen And Open Book; Landscape Background With Windsor Castle In The Distance in November 2013 with an auction result of GBP 35,000.00 (€ 42,117.82).
