When the work Racquel Reclining Wearing Purple Jumpsuit by Mickalene Thomas was auctioned at Christies in New York in May 2021, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - USD 600,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at USD 1,830,000.00 (€ 1,500,738.07). This high result makes Racquel Reclining Wearing Purple Jumpsuit the most expensive artwork by Mickalene Thomas that we have observed at auctions so far.
