Upper estimated price slightly exceeded
In July this year Christies held the auction Old Masters Part II, which included the work Portrait of a gentleman, half-length, in a black doublet, with white ruff and cuffs; portrait of a lady, half-length, in a black dress with flat white collar and jewelled brooch by Michiel van Mierevelt. Here, the upper estimate of GBP 20,000.00 was slightly exceeded - the artwork found a new owner for GBP 20,160.00 (€ 23,520.61). However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Michiel van Mierevelt - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of Jan van der Haer (1609-1665), half-length, in a black silk doublet with cutwork, edged with black lace; and Portrait of Levina Ockers (1607-1678), half-length, in a black dress with a double layered lace-trimmed ruff and jewelled collar, which sold at auction in May 2014 for EUR 79,500.00.
