Upper estimated price slightly exceeded
In July 2011 Sothebys in London held the auction Old Master and British Paintings Day Sale, which included the work Portrait Of A Gentleman, Three-Quarter Length, Standing, Wearing A Black Tunic And White Ruff by Michiel van Mierevelt. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 21,250.00 (€ 24,387.55), 18% above the upper estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Michiel van Mierevelt - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of Jan van der Haer (1609-1665), half-length, in a black silk doublet with cutwork, edged with black lace; and Portrait of Levina Ockers (1607-1678), half-length, in a black dress with a double layered lace-trimmed ruff and jewelled collar, which sold at auction in May 2014 for EUR 79,500.00.
