Description
MASAHISA FUKASE
Karasu -- Ravens. Tokyo: Sokyusha, 1986.
Square quarto (257 x 257 mm). 62 black and white photographs. Original black cloth, original glassine dust-jacket, original cardboard slipcase with printed paper label (dust-jacket chipped and creased, as often when found). Fukase's signature in paint pen on the front blank. Provenance: Japanese bookseller's ticket tipped on the inside flap.
FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY FUKASE, and with the rare glassine dust-jacket. 'The post-provoke masterpiece of Japanese photobooks... a technical as well as an aesthetic tour-de-force... its strength is that it works on so many levels -- graphically, descriptively, technically, metaphorically. The imagery is beautiful, surprising, haunting, but ultimately it is Fukase's masterly handling of the narrative and rhythm that makes it so memorable'. The Photobook, vol. I, p.306.

In May 2010 Christies in London held the auction Photobooks, which included the work Karasu -- Ravens. Tokyo: Sokyusha, 1986. by Masahisa Fukase. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 3,750.00 (€ 4,393.65), 25% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Masahisa Fukase achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Cape Erimo from Ravens in May 2016 with an auction result of GBP 93,750.00 (€ 122,333.86).
