This artwork by Luis Meléndez achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in January 2004. In the Important Old Master Paintings auction, the work Arbutus berries on a plate, apples, a wood barrel and bread rolls on a wooden table sold for USD 4,039,500.00 (€ 3,244,057.18) - well above the upper estimate of USD 2,000,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Luis Meléndez; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Oranges, nuts, spices, boxes of sweetmeats, a jug and a cask on a table sold at auction in February 2012 with the realized price of GBP 3,513,250.00 (€ 4,194,913.60).
