- Acquired from the artist by Edward Mundy (1750-1822), circa 1789, and by descent at Markeaton Hall, Derby, and elsewhere, through Major Peter Miller Mundy, until sold to the present owner through Agnew's, London, in 1992.

Upper estimated price slightly exceeded
In July 2021 Christies in London held the auction Old Masters Evening Sale, which included the work Vesuvius in eruption, viewed from Posillipo by Joseph Wright of Derby. Here, the upper estimate of GBP 1,200,000.00 was slightly exceeded - the artwork found a new owner for GBP 1,222,500.00 (€ 1,433,634.74). Admittedly, works by Joseph Wright of Derby have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work An Academy By Lamplight in December 2017 with an auction result of GBP 7,263,700.00 (€ 8,174,230.35).
Oberer Schätzpreis leicht übertroffen
Im Juli 2021 führte Christies in London die Auktion Old Masters Evening Sale durch, in der auch die Arbeit Vesuvius in eruption, viewed from Posillipo von Joseph Wright of Derby zur Versteigerung kam. Dabei wurde der obere Schätzpreis von GBP 1.200.000,00 leicht übertroffen – das Kunstwerk fand für GBP 1.222.500,00 (€ 1.433.634,74) einen neuen Besitzer. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Joseph Wright of Derby auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit An Academy By Lamplight im Dezember 2017 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 7.263.700,00 (€ 8.174.230,35).
