This artwork by Joseph Gandy achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in January 2015. In the Old Master Drawings auction, the work Recto: Near Southwick, West Sussex; Verso: A Colour Beginning And A Compass sold for USD 8,750.00 (€ 7,750.22) - well above the upper estimate of USD 5,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Joseph Gandy achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Design for Waterloo Palace, the proposed town residence of the Duke of Wellington in May 2008 with an auction result of GBP 118,100.00 (€ 150,228.36).
