Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Thorpe Watering, near Norwich, Norfolk, seen from the west with the church of St Andrew's by John Thirtle was auctioned at Christies in London in March last year, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 2,000.00 – 3,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 1,386.00 (€ 1,643.26). Admittedly, works by John Thirtle have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of John Sell Cotman, Mrs Edmund Miles And Ann Miles In The Miles Family Farmhouse, Felbrigg, Norfolk in November 2006 with an auction result of GBP 9,000.00 (€ 13,365.28).
