Auction result misses estimated price range
This work of art by John J. Holmes could be acquired at Christies in London in November 2012 for an unexpectedly low price. In the Maritime Art auction, the work Westward racing on the Clyde with the paddle steamer Marmion off her starboard beam; and Britannia and Westward racing to windward on the Clyde changed hands for GBP 1,500.00 (€ 1,847.85) - missing the lower end of the estimate range of GBP 1,800.00 – 2,200.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by John J. Holmes - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Astra, Candida and Shamrock (V) racing off Cowes, 1934, which sold at auction in May 2007 for GBP 2,880.00 (€ 4,238.11).
