This artwork by John J. Holmes achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in May 2012. In the Maritime Art auction, the work Sonya and Candida racing downwind on the Clyde with the paddle steamer Marmion and H.M.S. Balmoral Castle astern of them (illustrated); and Lulworth and Candida racing on the Clyde with the Union Castle Line's Edinburgh Castle at anchor beyond sold for GBP 3,250.00 (€ 4,049.36) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 1,800.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by John J. Holmes; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Astra, Candida and Shamrock (V) racing off Cowes, 1934 sold at auction in May 2007 with the realized price of GBP 2,880.00 (€ 4,238.11).
