Sold at the lower estimate price
The work Portrait Of Dr. Edmund Ayrton (1704-1808), Half Length, In Crimson Choirmaster Robes by John Hoppner was sold in the Master Paintings auction at Sothebys in New York in May 2018. The result of USD 10,000.00 (€ 8,568.98) was exactly at the lower end of the estimate range of USD 10,000.00 – 15,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by John Hoppner achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Henrietta Maria Vernon Atherton, 2nd Lady Lilford (d. 1820), of Atherton Hall, Leigh, with her two children in July 2021 with an auction result of GBP 81,900.00 (€ 96,044.73).
