A top price for John Hoppner
When the work Henrietta Maria Vernon Atherton, 2nd Lady Lilford (d. 1820), of Atherton Hall, Leigh, with her two children by John Hoppner was auctioned at Sothebys in London in July 2021, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 15,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than five times as high at GBP 81,900.00 (€ 96,044.73). This high result makes Henrietta Maria Vernon Atherton, 2nd Lady Lilford (d. 1820), of Atherton Hall, Leigh, with her two children the most expensive artwork by John Hoppner that we have observed at auctions so far.
