Auction result well in line with expectations
The work U.S. schooner Atlas engaging the British merchantmen Pursuit and Planter, 5th August 1812 (illustrated); and The U.S.S. President and the British Sixth Rate H.M.S. Little Belt off North Carolina, 15th May 1811 by John Bentham-Dinsdale was sold in the Maritime Art auction at Christies in London in November 2011. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 1,500.00 – 2,500.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 1,625.00 (€ 1,897.02) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Admittedly, works by John Bentham-Dinsdale have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work H.M.S. Crescent, under the command of Captain James Saumarez, capturing the French frigate Réunion off Cherbourg, 20 October 1793 in March 2017 with an auction result of GBP 8,125.00 (€ 9,521.70).
