Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Playa de Valencia by Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida was auctioned at Bonhams in New York in November this year, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 250,000.00 – 350,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 222,750.00 (€ 204,207.92). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Spanish pescadores Valencianos (Valencian Fishermen) in November 2012 with an auction result of GBP 3,737,250.00 (€ 4,603,912.82).
