Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
The work The mouth of an estuary (the Brill?) by Jan van de Cappelle was worth GBP 1,871,250.00 (€ 2,054,508.09) to a buyer in July 2019. This price was achieved in the auction Old Masters Evening Sale at Christies in London and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of GBP 600,000.00 many times over. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Jan van de Cappelle - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work A kaag and a smak in a calm, with fishermen pulling in their catch from a rowing-boat in the foreground, a Dutch frigate and other boats beyond, which sold at auction in July 2005 for GBP 3,592,000.00 (€ 5,210,162.09).
