Auction result misses estimated price range
In May 2008 a collector was able to acquire the work Portrait traditionally identified as Hester Thrale (1741-1821), bust length, in profile by James Sharples for GBP 312.50 (€ 397.51). This price was achieved in the auction The Arthur Ackermann and Peter Johnson Collection: A Connoisseur's Choice at Christies in London and was even below the estimate range of GBP 400.00 – 600.00 set by the auction house. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by James Sharples achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work George Washington in January 2021 with an auction result of USD 325,000.00 (€ 267,820.35).
